Kenwood TR-7800 Repair

Unit powered on and made noise, but no display.

Sometimes the frequency would blink on for a brief second when powered on, but then go dark.

Determined Q15 5 volt regulator on the control board was bad.

Replaced regulator and got frequency display.

Had trouble getting the unit to start properly without batteries installed, but works reliably with the batteries in.

Next problem was that some of the front keypad keys, specifically the second and 4th column were not working.

This was a major problem because I was unable to set + - offset or simplex. Also no LED was lit to show what the current setting was, but when keying the mic I saw it switch to negative offset.

Disassembled and tested keypad unit -- could not find any obvious faults.

Returned to control board for some other flakiness and checked for bad solder joints and through-hole vias as seen on various Kenwood control boards from the era.

Resoldered a lot of these questionable spots on the control board and when reassembled -- all the buttons worked again!

Unit transmits and receives fine, but is a little off frequency.

Looking forward to finishing the adjustments, adding a tone board, and getting this nice old radio back on the air.
